A lot of adult players say the same thing on their first lesson: I wish I had started years ago. The good news is that adults pick up tennis well. You understand instructions, you can connect cause and effect, and you usually show up because you actually want to be there. Here is what adult tennis lessons look like and how to get started.
Starting from zero
If you have never played, the first few lessons cover grip, the ready position, a simple forehand and backhand, and a basic serve. Most of the early work happens in the service boxes where the ball is slower and you have time to set up. By lesson three or four, most adults can keep a friendly rally going.
Nobody expects you to look like a pro. The goal is comfortable, repeatable strokes that make the game fun.

Coming back after years away
Returning players usually have more in the tank than they think. Timing comes back quickly; what tends to be missing is footwork, fitness and confidence under pace. A few focused private lessons often bring back a surprising amount of your old game, and it is a good moment to fix the habit that always bothered you, whether that is a second serve or a backhand you run around.
Protect your body
Poom's own playing career ended with a rotator cuff injury at 19, so injury prevention is not an afterthought in these lessons. Adults are coached to generate power from legs and rotation rather than the arm, to warm up properly, and to build hitting volume gradually. Tell your coach about any old injuries before you start.
My own playing career ended with a rotator cuff injury at 19. Protecting adult players' bodies is part of every lesson.
Private, semi-private or group?
- Private ($125 per hour): fastest progress and fully built around your goals.
- Semi-private ($65 per player): great with a partner, spouse or friend at your level.
- Group ($50 per player): social, more game play, lower cost.
- Liveball ($40 per player): high energy point play once you can rally.
Fitting tennis into a busy week
The biggest obstacle for adults is time, not talent. Because the coach comes to a court near your home or office, a lesson costs you an hour rather than two. Sessions run every day from 7am to 8pm, so early mornings before work and evenings after it are both easy to book. Many adults set up a recurring weekly slot so it simply becomes part of the routine.
Where adult lessons happen
Adult players train across Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Altadena, Arcadia and Glendale, plus Burbank, Studio City, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Hollywood and more. See the full list of service areas or read about adult tennis coaching.
It is not too late, and it is not too early to start this week. Request your first lesson.
