Liveball

Liveball tennis sessions in Los Angeles

Tennis with the standing around removed: continuous points, fast rotations and a real sweat.

Liveball is a group format where the ball is almost always in play. Players rotate through short point sequences, a new ball is fed the second a point ends, and you are in a different situation every few seconds.

Live ball tennis works because it forces the things ordinary practice avoids: first-ball reactions, transitions to the net, defending from awkward positions and playing points when your legs are already tired. You will hit more balls in an hour here than in two hours of a traditional clinic.

02The session

How a liveball session runs

Sixty to ninety minutes, almost all of it live. The warmup is short because the session is the workout.

  1. 01

    First 10 minutes

    Quick warmup

Short-court rallying and movement prep. Brief, because you will be warm within two minutes of the first live ball.

  2. 02

    Next 20 minutes

    Feed into live

A fed first ball, then the point plays out. Rotation after each point so the next player is already stepping in.

  3. 03

    Next 25 minutes

    Live ball games

King of the court, two on one, transition games. Scored, competitive and continuous.

  4. 04

    Last 15 minutes

    Play tired

The hardest block on purpose. Points played when your legs are gone, which is exactly when matches are decided.

01In detail

Why it improves players faster than drilling

A fed drill lets you get ready. A live ball does not. The gap between those two things is where most recreational players lose matches, because they can execute a shot perfectly when they know it is coming and not at all when they do not.

Liveball closes that gap by making every ball a surprise. It also removes the thinking time that lets players talk themselves out of the right shot.

The workout is real

An hour of liveball is a genuine cardio session. You are moving continuously, recovering between points rather than between drills, and hitting under fatigue for the last third of it.

That last part matters competitively. Almost every recreational match is decided in a third set by whoever is still moving their feet, and this is the only format that trains that specifically.

How the rotation works

Players rotate through positions after each point or short sequence, so everyone gets time on both sides of the court and in both singles and doubles situations. Nobody hides in one spot for the hour.

Group sizes are kept to what the court can hold while keeping the ball moving. When there is enough demand in an area, a second court is added rather than squeezing more players onto one.

03Is it for you

Solid intermediate
Yes. If you can keep a rally going and get a serve in, you will keep up and you will improve quickly.
Advanced
Yes, and it is the best conditioning you can get while still playing tennis rather than running laps.
Beginner
Not yet. The pace assumes you can rally consistently. Start with private or semi-private lessons and come to liveball once rallies hold up.
