Minors and liability

What a parent or guardian is agreeing to when a junior player takes a lesson, and the risks everyone on court accepts.

Last updated: September 22, 2026

Junior coaching is a large part of what Poom's Tennis Academy does. This page sets out the consent, supervision and risk terms that apply to every player under 18, and the assumption of risk that applies to adults too.

Parent or guardian consent

A player under 18 can only be coached with the agreement of a parent or legal guardian. Booking a lesson for a child, or bringing a child to a session, confirms that you are that parent or guardian and that you accept these terms and the terms of service on the child's behalf.

Consent covers the booked lessons, not open-ended supervision. It can be withdrawn at any time by telling Poom.

Supervision and drop-off

For players under 13, a parent, guardian or nominated adult stays at the court for the whole session. Coaching is not a childcare service, and public courts are open spaces that Poom does not control.

For players 13 and over, drop-off is fine by prior agreement, provided a responsible adult is reachable by phone throughout and arrives at the finish time. Poom cannot stay with a player after the session ends.

Medical information and emergencies

Tell Poom before the first lesson about asthma, allergies, diabetes, heart conditions, seizures, recent concussion, current injuries or anything else that affects safe participation, along with any medication the player carries.

In a medical emergency where a parent cannot be reached, you authorise Poom to call emergency services and to allow treatment to be given. Any cost of treatment or transport is the responsibility of the player or their family.

Poom is trained to recognise heat illness and common court injuries and will stop a session whenever safety requires it. He does not diagnose, treat or clear a player to return from injury.

Assumption of risk

Tennis and pickleball involve running, sudden changes of direction, ball impact, racquet and paddle contact, hard or uneven court surfaces, sun and heat. Injury is possible even when a session is run carefully.

By taking part, or by allowing a child to take part, you accept these ordinary risks and confirm that the player is medically fit to play. Sessions are structured around the player's age, level and fitness, and any concern raised on court is acted on immediately.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by California law, Poom's Tennis Academy and Poom are not liable for injury, illness, or loss or damage to personal property arising from participation in a lesson, or from the condition of a court arranged between the parties, except where caused by gross negligence or wilful misconduct.

This page does not limit any right that cannot lawfully be limited, and it is not a waiver of a minor's own claims under California law. Personal medical and accident insurance remains the responsibility of the player or their family.

Photos and video

Photographs and video are sometimes taken on court. Video used for stroke analysis is shared with the player or parent and then deleted on request.

Nothing showing a junior player is ever posted publicly without separate written permission from a parent or guardian. Permission is opt in, never assumed, and it can be withdrawn at any time by email, after which the material is taken down.

Behaviour and safeguarding

Coaching sessions are held in open, public view. Poom will not meet a junior player privately away from the court or transport a junior player in a vehicle. Parents are welcome to watch any session.
